Case Study
National Railway Museum, York
Installation of 180 LED Light Fixtures in the Main Hall via Rope Access
Elevator Pitch:
Stadium Support Services’ rope access team was tasked with replacing 180 high-level light fixtures at the National Railway Museum in York. The project required designing a bespoke access system to navigate the steelwork above museum artefacts, enabling the safe installation of new LED units with minimal disruption.
Challenge
The team faced the challenge of working 25 meters above irreplaceable museum exhibits, including historic trains that could not be moved. Due to the museum’s daytime operations, all work had to be performed during 10-hour night shifts. With light fixtures positioned within the steel framework, the team developed a tension line system to access each unit safely. The nature of the work required extreme caution to avoid any damage to the artefacts while maintaining strict safety standards.
Solution
A custom rope access system, including tension lines and a comprehensive rescue plan, was designed to allow technicians to position themselves between the steel structures. This enabled precise and safe removal of old fixtures and installation of the new LED units. The highly trained team worked methodically, testing each fixture post-installation to ensure optimal functionality, delivering long-term energy savings to the museum without interrupting its daily operations.
“Stadium Support Services were contracted by JCB and son to fulfil the LED replacement of over 200 no. high level hanging light fixtures. Their experience in accessing high level areas with their expert teams was the ideal solution for our project. As we could not move any of the clients assets on the Museum floor we needed them carry out the replacement lighting works utilising their Rope access teams from the steel work. Their technicians worked with absolute professionalism throughout and helped us deliver the project on time and with no disruption to the museums normal opening hours. Fantastic service and seamless delivery of a very tricky project”
