Repurposing a Heritage Scoreboard Building into a New Club Shop
As Official Projects Partner to Worcestershire County Cricket Club, Stadium Support Services was engaged to transform an underutilised heritage scoreboard building into a new club shop. Located on a site affected by annual flooding, the project required a solution that protected the building’s character while creating a practical and resilient retail space that could be adapted and reinstated each season.
The Challenge
The challenge was to create a functional retail environment while remaining sympathetic to a much-loved heritage structure. Project timings also required careful management. Works could not begin too early due to the risk of further flooding, yet the programme still needed to be completed ahead of the start of the cricket season, resulting in a condensed delivery window and fast turnaround.
Scope of Work
- Installation of new windows following the creation of large apertures
- Installation of glass doors to provide greater visibility into the shop
- Rewiring of electrical systems, fed from above to avoid flood water and potential water damage
- Modular fixtures and fittings designed to be removed at the end of each season
- Moisture extraction and ventilation measures to reduce the risk of mould and damp during the off-season
- Sympathetic external restoration works to return the building to its former glory
The Solution
The heritage structure was adapted to operate as a retail space during the cricket season, with all internal fixtures, point-of-sale equipment and fittings designed to be fully removable in the off-season. Large glazed windows and entrance doors were introduced to improve visibility into the shop and create a more open and inviting customer experience, while still respecting the building’s character.
To mitigate the risks posed by annual flooding, all electrical services were routed from above rather than at floor level, reducing the likelihood of water damage during flood events. Internal floor and wall finishes were also selected to allow efficient cleaning, maintenance, and repainting between seasons. The end result was a club shop fully fitted out and selling merchandise ready for the first home fixture of the season
