Asbestos Cement Roof Replacement & New Metal Profile Roofing Installation
As Official Facilities Management Partner to Queens Park Rangers FC, Stadium Support Services removed the asbestos cement roof above the Stanley Bowles Stand at Loftus Road Stadium and installed a new metal profile roofing system.
The project was completed within a live stadium environment over a tight 20-day programme. Careful planning, stringent safety controls and close coordination with the club ensured the works were delivered ahead of the scheduled pitch renovation.
The Challenge
The existing asbestos cement roof had reached the end of its operational life and required complete replacement.
With only 20 working days available before pitch renovation works commenced, the programme was extremely tight. In addition, the project had to be delivered around ongoing commercial activities within the stadium to minimise disruption and avoid loss of revenue.
A scaffold structure with a loading bay provided safe access and efficient material handling. Due to the fragile roof, extensive temporary works were required, including edge-protection guardrails and fall-arrest netting, all of which had to be removed ahead of the pitch renovation programme.
Scope of Work
- Construction of a scaffold loading bay providing roof-level access, as well as safe loading and unloading of roofing materials
- Removal of the existing roof and safe disposal of hazardous asbestos waste
- Air monitoring, waste management and PPE controls throughout the asbestos removal process
- Installation of trackway to mitigate damage to the playing surface
- Installation of safety netting and debris netting using MEWPs
- Installation of guardrails to the front and rear roof edges
- Supply and installation of a new roof consisting of box-profiled steel sheeting
The Solution
Working to a carefully planned programme, Stadium Support Services implemented a comprehensive access and safety strategy to ensure the roof replacement works were completed safely.
A dedicated scaffold loading bay was constructed to facilitate material handling, while trackway protection allowed multiple 20-tonne MEWPs to operate with minimal damage to the pitch. Safety netting, debris netting and guardrail systems were installed to create a secure working environment
throughout the project.
The existing asbestos cement roof was safely removed and disposed of in accordance with all relevant regulations, supported by continuous air monitoring and strict site controls. Once complete, the new metal profile roofing system was installed, providing a durable, long-term solution for the stadium. Through close coordination with the club, the works were successfully delivered without impacting commercial activities or delaying the off-season pitch renovations.
