Clean & Recoat of Steelwork

Specialist clean and recoat of steelwork and roof structures delivered via rope access

Stadium Support Services delivered the full cleaning and recoating of 16 cantilever steel clusters supporting the main stand at Wycombe Wanderers Football Club. The project was completed using rope access techniques, with all works carried out at height up to 40 metres, across 1,000 sqm of exposed steelwork. The programme was delivered in 12 weeks, applying a two-coat industrial coating system to extend the life of the structure and protect against corrosion.

The Challenge

The works involved treating high-level steelwork and roof structures in a live stadium environment.
Traditional access methods would have been costly, time-consuming and disruptive to operations. The project required a solution that minimised impact on daily use, while maintaining the highest safety standards and ensuring long-term protection of the steelwork against corrosion.

Scope of Work

Team
Deployed a team of 8 IRATA & ICAT qualified rope access painters throughout the 12-week programme of works

Coatings
Applied a two-coat industrial protective system across 1,000 sqm of steelwork

Finish
Ensured structural coatings were applied to extend the lifespan of the cantilever steel clusters

Access
Delivered all works via rope access due to restricted site conditions and pitch protection requirements

The Solution
The steel clusters were located in highly exposed areas, subject to challenging weather conditions, which added complexity to the project.
Access was another major factor: the roof structure and new pitch meant no machinery could be driven onto the playing surface, leaving large sections of the steelwork unreachable by traditional methods.
Rope access was therefore the only practical solution, requiring skilled IRATA-qualified painters to operate safely at height.

We were impressed with how seamlessly Stadium Support Services delivered the project. They overcame complex access challenges with rope access and achieved a durable, high-quality finish.

The challenge was to access a previously unaccessed grandstand develop a safe access strategy and deliver a long-term protection solution, while working around the venue’s live calendar to ensure minimal disruption.

Scope of Work

  • Internal steelwork cleaned using MEWPs and specialist equipment
  • High-level pigeon spikes removed, cleaned and replaced
  • External window cleaning integrated into the programme

Club Shop Roof Replacement

As the official projects partner for Bradford City AFC, we were tasked with resolving significant issues in the club shop roof, which had deteriorated and developed extensive leaks. A thorough inspection confirmed the need for a complete rebuild to ensure a durable, weather-tight solution.

The Challenge

The roof project presented several challenges. Lifting the existing roof revealed extensive pooling in certain areas, a result of sealant failure and ageing. The structure’s deterioration made a full rebuild unavoidable. The decision was made to strip back the old roof and install a new apex roof to resolve all underlying issues with a more durable and reliable solution.

The Solution

The team undertook a comprehensive rebuild of the roof, which included installing new timbers, upgrading insulation, applying new boarding and re-felting. The new apex design was chosen for its improved durability while preventing any further water pooling.
The project was delivered as a complete turnkey solution, with all aspects managed by the team at Stadium Support Services. The team liaised with the local council to secure permits, coordinated scaffolding and oversaw the roof replacement from design to completion. Thanks to favourable weather conditions, the project was completed ahead of schedule, reducing the timeline from six weeks to four.
“The team’s expertise and efficiency exceeded expectations. The new apex roof is a significant upgrade and was delivered ahead of schedule. We’re thrilled with the result and grateful for the professional approach throughout.”
